Save Our Crossing

Vicky and Vinny were up at the crack of dawn collecting signatures
Lewisham Councillors have slammed Transport for London’s decision to rip out a much used crossing near St. John’s station.
TfL’s decision to remove the crossing, along with 144 others across London, was taken with only the car user in mind, not the pedestrian. The plan is supposed to increase traffic speed along Lewisham Way but removing the crossing will make getting to the train station or St. John’s Medical Centre more dangerous for people on foot.
Councillors Vicky Foxcroft and Vincent Davis were up at the crack of dawn collecting support for a petition to London Mayor Boris Johnson to reverse this decision.
Vicky said, “Boris Johnson says that he wants to remove crossings to speed up traffic flow. Hundreds of people use this crossing every day because it’s right next to St. John’s station and St. John’s Medical Centre. The amount of use the crossing gets far outweighs the tiny predicted increase in traffic flow. We all know that Boris favours car owners but he should take account of pedestrians, including people in wheelchairs, older people and mothers with prams, who will be affected by this.”
Vincent said, “Crossings are there for the safety of pedestrians. Certainly there are crossings in London that aren’t used much but this isn’t one of them. People should be encouraged to use public transport but making them take their lives in their hands crossing a busy road to get to the station just isn’t on. Boris Johnson needs to think again and cancel this crazy idea.
