Labour leads on recycling
We’d like to say thank you to Lewisham residents for your help in reducing the amount of rubbish we send to landfill - it means that Lewisham’s landfill rate is only 7% which is the 4th lowest in the country.
You have helped Lewisham’s Labour Council to increase the ‘kerbside’ recycling of household waste to 20%. By continuing to separate your rubbish into recycling materials (your green wheelie bin) and non-recycling materials (your black wheelie bin) we aim to increase kerbside recycling to 25% in 2012.
Moreover, we listened to residents and have retained weekly collections for both the green and the black bins and we now recycle street litter.
Lewisham Council incinerates 70% of the Borough’s waste at the energy recovery facility SELCHP in Deptford. This generates electricity for around 46,000 homes which would otherwise have used greenhouse gas-producing fossil fuels. Take a look at SELCHP online at www.selchp.com
