Government Slammed Over Free Swimming
Lewisham Labour has slammed the new Tory-Lib Dem government after they axed the popular free swimming scheme. Free swimming was one of the Labour government's 2012 legacy programmes and had received backing from Olympic gold medallist Adrian Moorhouse and Chief Executive of the Amateur Swimming Association David Sparks.
Labour Mayor Steve Bullock said, "This was a policy that people in Lewisham really benefited from. Thousands of children who otherwise wouldn't have the chance to go swimming were given that chance and it was giving our borough's older people the chance to get active again. The government coalition really need to take greater care to ensure that when they wield the scythe, they cut at the waste first and think long and hard before they make cuts like this that will affect the most vulnerable."
