Don't Get Bitten By Loan Sharks
Heidi Alexander, Lewisham’s Deputy Mayor and Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Lewisham East, is warning residents of the dangers of loan sharks operating in the borough.
Heidi recently met with Liam Carlisle from the Lewisham and Bromley Credit Union to discuss the extent of the problem of illegal money lending and the ways in which the Council can work with credit unions to promote responsible and safe credit.
Heidi said, “In the period just after Christmas, families need to know that there are ways that they can get financial help and advice. Loan sharks prey on the old and the vulnerable, especially at this time of year, which is why I’m calling on the Council to work both with the credit unions to promote safe borrowing and with other boroughs to crack down on illegal moneylenders who operate across London.”
Liam Carlisle said, “I’m grateful for the support that Lewisham Council has given over the years to help our Credit Union and, in turn, our 6000 members. I meet people every day who need financial assistance and I’d advise anyone to see how credit unions can help – they should never, ever go to a loan shark. I’m looking forward to working with Heidi and Lewisham Council to raise awareness of the services credit unions offer and the dangers of unlicensed money lenders.”
